A simple guide to forming healthy habits

I have a conversation with many women on a daily basis about how hard it is to stick to healthy habits. Whether that’s working out, eating well, getting up early, going to bed early, it’s a constant struggle for many.

I met a client recently who was going through a tough time. She came to me, really wanting to change her habits, and lose weight, but always failed to achieve this goal. Let’s call her Lisa. And Lisa was so frustrated! She didn’t understand why she would lose a little bit of weight, and then gain it back so quick. She wanted it badly but felt so bad that she couldn’t get where she wanted to be.

Lisa was so results focused, she would obsess about every meal, every calorie, and weight her self every day. It was a constant battle. So I asked her to trust my method for one month, and if she was unhappy, she could go back to her normal ways.

I asked Lisa not to weigh herself for the month, and to focus on every action she took throughout the day instead. And I asked her to view herself as either being on the success curve, or the failure curve. Every action you take throughout the day, puts you on one or the other. So if you press snooze and don’t get up on time, you’re on the failure curve.

If you skip a workout, you’re on the failure curve. If you get to your workout, you’re instantly back on the success curve. So rather than think to yourself, ‘I’ll skip this workout, what harm will it do?’,  know that that little action takes you onto the failure curve.

The habits and actions we take on a daily basis will eventually lead us to success. But it may not look like we’re succeeding in the short term, things may not look different, and it’s at this point, when people stop. ”I’m not getting results, therefore I give up.”

Healthy action steps are easy to do and easy not to do.

Focus on your actions on a daily basis and try to keep the focus off the results, until you get there.

Focus on seeing yourself on the success curve, when you make good choices. (Arrow at the top on graph)

Focus on this, and you will be successful. Lisa has achieved her goal weight for the first time since she had kids BTW 🙂
